The mail was probably damaged due to the stormy weather conditions in the North Atlantic. The mail was delivered to London where Boxed 'DAMAGED BY IMMERSION / IN SEA WATER' applied Imprint of another adhesive on the reverse, through water damage.

Straight line 'PAID' and '9 FEB 1865' The first time I have seen a triangular adhesive paying the fee. Printed cheques were not issued in South Africa until the mid 1880's Edge faults & folds.
