1957 charred envelope from Barbados addressed to Funchal Maderia adhesives tied 'AIR MAIL G.P.O. BARBADOS' c.d.s. '11 NO 57' Carried on the flying boat "Sydney" of Aquila Airways which left Southampton on 16th November 1957 for Lisbon. The aircraft crashed into a hillside near Newport on the Isle of Wight after one of it's engines caught fire, killing 44. The envelope was returned to the sender in an official 'Ambulance' envelope which also bears the purple crash cachet.
